Student Gripes Could Lower High Fees For Indoor Tennis

By Patricia C. Gadecki

The current policy of charging students for use of the indoor tennis courts at Plamer Dixon and the Indoor Track and Tennis Facilities could be revised next year if students register sufficient complaints, but the policy will probably stand for the remainder of this year, Andronike E. Janus, assistant director of Athletics said yesterday.

The current policy charges students between $4 and $16 an hour for courts, depending on the time of day. Otherwise, they can buy contracts ranging from $200 to $400 to use courts for 32 90-minute periods. Unlike last year, students can not play for free in the mornings.

The Quincy House committee is heading a letter campaign urging the Department of Athletics to lower the prices for using tennis courts or to remove them altogether, Willie H. Goffney '78, said yesterday.

"We are trying to get as many people as possible to write to the atheltic director voicing their complains," he added.

Many students have gone to the department offices in person to complain about the high tennis court rates, Janus said yesterday, adding that if students begin to complain louder and more often, the current policy stands a change of being revised.

"It's really sad to have to pay $8000 a year to come here and then to have to pay such outrageous fees to use the indoor tennis courts," a sophomore who asked not to be identified said yesterday.

"The per capita cost for tennis is high," Janus said, adding that the department is using the fees to generate income to help cover the costs of maintaining the indoor facilities.

The Indoor Track and Tennis complex costs $175,000 a year in maintainance, she added.
