Ellery Garage

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

THE RELOCATION OF the controversial Ellery Garage from Broadway Street to East Cambridge last week comes as welcome news to Harvard Square residents. Repeated complaints of overcharging on towing and storage rates, reckless driving by Ellery employees that culminated in a fatal traffic accident last July and charges that Ellery personnel harassed Broadway Street residents sparked two investigations by the State Department of Public Utilities (DPU). The agency probes resulted in a 60-day suspension of Ellery's towing license that went into effect on October 1; further punitive action may be taken in coming weeks.

Ellery's repeated violations of state and municipal regulations, as well as the neighborhood grievances, also justify a revocation of Ellery's license, a measure the DPU originally recommended. Regardless of whether the DPU revokes the license, Harvard certainly should not support the garage by further use of its services.
