The Boston concert scene is about closed up for the summer, after the July appearances of the Jefferson Starship and Jethro Tull within seven days of each other, but the Cambridge-Boston club scene is alive and kicking, and some local bands are scheduled that are definitely worth checking out:

Band X. Interesting music, at Pooh's Pub in Boston, August 11 to 15.

The Flying Burrito Brothers and Keith Carradine. The Brothers without Gram Parsons, and Keith Carradine without talent, at Paul's Mall, tonight through August 12.

The Pousette-Dart Band. Avery, very fine band that will make you forget all about Fleetwood Mac--don't miss this if you can. Tonight and tomorrow, at Jonathan Swift's.

Chuck McDermott and Wheatstraw. Fine country music from McDermott, 15-year-old Tina Welch (with a voice like butter, my friends say), Rocky Stone and Red Green. August 13 at the Zircon in Somerville.

John Lincoln Wright and the Sour Mash Boys. Ever present and always fine, August 15 at Jonathan Swift's.

If that's not enough, you can always look forward to bigger name acts heading our way later this month and the first part of September:

Jimmy Cliff. The star of "The Harder They Come" in what's billed as his only New England performance, Saturday, August 28 at The Music Inn in Lenox, 5 p.m.

The Band. Probably the best American band playing, and playing Lenox Sunday, August 29, 4 p.m.

Ronee Blakley. The star of "Nashville" and the Rolling Thunder Revue appears at Passim Coffeeshop, Sunday, August 29. (You can also pick up the Passim acts live every Sunday at 2 p.m. on WCAS.)

Hot Tuna. Papa John Creach's band, also at Lenox Music Inn. Saturday, September 4, at 5 p.m. (All the Music Inn tickets are $5.50 in advance, $6.50 at the gate, and can be purchased from Ticketron or from the Music Inn at 413-637-2200.)

That's about it except for one item--if you're into dancing, a fine opportunity for it presents itself this Thursday when none other than Archie Bell & the Drells headline a dance concert at the Boston Arena with Trammps and Brass Construction, August 12 at 7:30 p.m.
