Fox, Jewett Lead List For Dean Post

By James Cramer

With less than a month to go, John B. Fox '59, assistant dean of the Faculty, is still on the inside track to be named the next College dean.

L. Fred Jewett '57, dean of admissions and financial aid, is also considered to be a prime candidate to succeed Charles P. Whitlock, the current dean, when he leaves his post on June 30.

Dean Rosovsky said yesterday he prefers that a selection be made before Commencement so that the candidate's nomination can be ratified at the Corporation's June meeting.

Rosovsky said the search committee is considering about five candidates for the post.

Although Rosovsky declined to mention the other candidates by name, Alberta Arthurs, dean of undergraduate affairs, Archie C. Epps III, dean of students, and Robert E. Kaufmann '62, assistant dean for financial affairs, are also considered to be candidates.

Rosovsky said last month he favors confining the search to those within the University because the Faculty cannot afford to add to the size and cost of the administrative staff and because he places "considerable weight on the need for someone intimately familiar with the affairs of the College."

The search for a new dean of the College began in April when Rosovsky announced that Whitlock will leave that office to fill the new post of associate dean of the Faculty.
