Rosovsky Creates Search Committee To Select a New Dean of the College

By James Cramer

Dean Rosovsky yesterday announced the formation of a search committee to appoint a new dean of Harvard College.

That committee includes Rosovsky, George F. Carrier, acting dean of Engineering and Applied Physics, Burton S. Dreben '49, dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Francis M. Pipkin, associate dean of the Faculty for the Colleges.

The search will be confined to a pool of internal candidates with not less than five to ten years of experience in University administration.

Such criteria place John B. Fox '59, assistant dean of the Faculty, in the forefront of a very small group of potential candidates from University Hall.

Archie C. Epps III, dean of students, is also a potential candidate.

Alberta Arthurs, dean of undergraduate affairs, thought by some to be a candidate, was eliminated by the five-year experience requirement. Arthurs came to Radcliffe in fall 1973.

Rosovsky said he favors confining the search to those within the University because the Faculty cannot afford to add to the size and cost of the administrative staff and because he places "considerable weight on the need for someone intimately familiar with the affairs of the College."

President Bok, who consulted with Rosovsky on the appointment criteria, said last night the announced criteria are entirely in accord with affirmative action principles since filling the post involves "simply re-arranging duties" of personnel within the administration.

The position of dean of the College opened two weeks ago when Rosovsky announced that Charles P. Whitlock will leave that post to fill the new post of associate dean of the Faculty
