Mather House students met yesterday with Dean Whitlock and Francis M. Pipkin, associate dean of the Faculty for the Colleges, to discuss the crowding situations in their House.
Kenneth L. Josselyn '77, vice-chairman of the Mather House committee, asked the deans to move 30 students out of Mather as an "arbitrary measure to correct the problem this year."
He added that "in the long run" corrections should be made in the system used to determine how many students are assigned to each House. That system "is unfair to Mather" because it does not take into account architectural differences between Mather and other Houses, Josselyn said.
Whitlock told the students he will "seriously study" the present system to determine if adjustments should be made, but an "ad hoc decision" to solve the immediate problem will "only result in different problems" if it is not preceded by "careful study."
"Some solution to the problem will be found before June," Pipkin said yesterday. He added that if students are removed from Mather, it will be difficult to decide where to put them because "all the other Houses will raise Cain."
Mather students are in the process of compiling data in an attempt to refute a claim made April 21 by Bruce Collier, assistant dean of the College, that Mather is "relatively less crowded" than any other House.
