Faculty Members AsK New Hearing In Holcombe Case

Nineteen Faculty members have called for a new hearing for Sherman L. Holcombe, a University kitchen worker, to review his grievances and disciplinary actions against him.

In a letter dated April 19 to Daniel Steiner '54, general counsel to the University, Faculty members said the April 8 appellate level hearing of the case was partial but proved the validity of Holcombe's grievance involving the nonposting of job openings.

The letter was a response to a letter Steiner had sent Holcombe which denied charges that the appellate judge favored management and refused to hear Holcombe's evidence, one of the 19 Faculty members said yesterday.

Neal I. Koblitz '69, assistant professor of Mathematics, said Steiner's denial "did not inspire any additional confidence in the University's handling of the Holcombe case."

Steiner yesterday refused to comment on the Faculty letter's suggestion that he personally conduct a new hearing and allow several of the letter's signers to be present.
