'Cliffe Crossers Lose Fourth Despite Use of Zone Defense

By Marc M. Sadowsky

The Radcliffe lacrosse team had its fourth chance for a victory yesterday, but couldn't pull it off, losing to a powerful Northeastern contingent, 13-4.

The laxwomen were never really in contention. Northeastern outscored Radcliffe 7-2 in the first half and 6-2 in the finale.

Carrie Minot led Radcliffe, tallying three times (the only shots she took), and team captain Carlene Rhodes scored the other goal.

Three Northeastern players registered 12 of their team's 13 goals. Jane Wilson stung Radcliffe five times and teammates Carol Rappoli and Jane Gallagher came through with four and three scores respectively.

"We played well in relation to other games," coach Debbie Field said yesterday. Northeastern was "unbelievably strong. We went into a zone because we knew they would have beat us, one-on-one."

But the zone, which Radcliffe used for the first time yesterday, was only partially successful.

"We didn't set it up soon enough a couple of times," Field said. "If we hadn't used the zone, the game could've been a real shmear."

The laxwomen have also been weakened by injuries. Mars Child, who Field describes as the "fastest player on the team" is scheduled to have a cartilage operation today.

Goalie Maude Wood is out with torn ligaments and Anna Jones and Carlyle Singer both have mononucleosis. Carlene Rhodes also has mono, but has continued to play.

With yesterday's loss, the laxwomen's record falls to 0-4. Saturday, the team will be looking for its first victory when Brown's lacrosse team travels to Cambridge for a Soldiers Field encounter.
