8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
Brown University displayed a "who's B.U.?" attitude last night, thrashing Cornell, 6-2, at the Boston Garden. Brown's ever-aggressive forechecking was the key factor in its overall awesome two-way performance.
The Big Red had its chances though, outshooting the Bruins, 34-31. Down at the end of two periods, Cornell came out roaring for the final act, and within three minutes was behind by only two, as Jim Vaughan's backhand nestled into the far corner behind Brown goalie Kevin McCabe.
That was enough to waken the temporarily hibernating Bruins. Less than a minute after a Cornell interference penalty, Brown's power play clicked for the only man-advantage goal of the contest. Bob McIntosh did the honors, intercepting a weak clearing pass and cranking a snapshot high into the right side past netminder David Chrastina.
Ten seconds later Brown rounded out the night's scoring when Dave Roberts took the draw and led winger Wayne Lucky in close untouched. Lucky responded and both teams skated out the last eleven-plus minutes in unspectacular fashion, with Brown sitting comfortably on its four-goal margin.
The first two periods saw classic up-and-down play, with almost no action in the neutral zone. Cornell was the main aggressor in the opening stanza, but the acrobatics of McCabe in the cage turned a 1-0 Cornell lead into a 2-1 advantage for Brown on goals by Mike Flanagan at 12:49 and Roberts at 17:58.
Brown was behind the wheel for the entire second period, cruising for two more goals, the first of pairs for both Lucky and Roberts.
