Kirkland Wins House Hockey, Downs Winthrop in Final, 2-1

By Elizabeth S. Stong

Kirkland House wrapped up the intramural hockey championship by defeating Winthrop House 2-1 Monday night at Watson Rink. The victory gave the Kirkland squad an undefeated 8-0-2 record on the season.

"Hard work and a lot of enthusiasm" characterized the Kirkland effort, said coach Mo Randall. "A lot of people come out," he added, "and everyone plays an equal amount." Superior goal tending by sophomore Drew Pallet, a stingy defense and consistent offense contributed to the successful season, explained Randall.

Jeff Garrity led the offense Monday night, netting both Kirkland goals. Ten minutes into the first period, he scored unassisted to put Kirkland ahead, 1-0. Walter Herbert and Marty Foye of Kirkland both played outstanding defense, and the Winthrop icemen remained scoreless at the half.

Both teams showed their strength and control in the second half. The play was marked by good up-and-down action, sharp passing, and very few penalties.

With six minutes left to play in the game, some of the Kirkland control disappeared. Steven Mullin of Winthrop House was pulled down from behind on a breakaway by Kirkland's Rob Wagman. Mullin slapped the penalty shot past goalie Drew Pallet to put Winthrop on the scoreboard and tie the game at 1-1.

Blew 'Em Away

The Kirkland House offense exploded. Sophomore Lucy Wood fired a near-miss shot hitting the post. Minutes later, senior Scott McNeilly assisted teammate Garrity who put it away for Kirkland with a shot over the shoulder of the Winthrop goalie.

Kirkland's next match will be on March 22 against the yet-to-be-determined champion of the Yale intramural hockey competition. Randall predicts victory over the Elis in the contest, to be held at Watson Rink.
