Cliffe Ski Team Places Third, Injuries Mar Team's Showing

By Raymond I. Cal

The Radcliffe ski team raced to a third place showing this weekend behind the University of Massachusetts and B.U. on Tenney Mountain in southern New Hampshire.

The team took the middle slot in the five-school, two-day competition which also includes the University of Connecticut and Merrimac College.

In the slalom event on Saturday, team captain Nicole Bourgois paced the squad by winning fourth place with a time of 111 seconds.

Lenny Wilson grabbed seventh place less than two seconds behind, and Cathy States finished 14th to round out the Crimson scoring.

The Bourgois Collapse

On Sunday, heavy snow and bad conditions hampered the racing in the giant slalom, and Bourgois was taken to the hospital after a bad fall on her first run. She stretched tendons in her foot and will not compete for several weeks.

Wilson and States both finished strong, however, taking eighth and tenth respectively.

Preserves

Eberly Ewing also placed 13th in Sunday's giant slalom to preserve Radcliffe's third place showing from the day before.

Radcliffe coach Peter Tolnai yesterday lamented the injuries that have hampered the squad all season. He is hopeful, he said, that Karen Linsley, who broke her ankle in training before the season, will return by the end of this month.

"If we were skiing with both Nicole and Karen we would be competing for the top spot against these other teams," he said wistfully.
