The Devil's Disciple. The Summer School Repertory Theater inaugurates its three-show season with a very funny production of George Bernard Shaw's unwitting tribute to the U.S. bicentennial. John Glover, all flamboyant charm in the title role, and James Valentine, mugging uproariously as "Gentlemanly Johnny" Burgoyne, head a distinguished professional cast.

While you're thinking theatre, it's not too soon to line up tickets for the Rep's next two shows, Life with Father and That Championship Season. Better yet think about getting rush seats ($3.95 half an hour before curtain) or ushering (free, and sometimes you get better seats than you could have bought.)

A Midsummer Night's Dream. Presented by the Open Door Theater at the Pinebank Art Center, outdoors on the Jamaicaway in Jamaica Plain. Performances Thursday through Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $3.

Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope. Black musical at the Charles Playhouse, 76 Warrenton St. in Boston. Performances Tuesday through Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 6 and 9:30 p.m., and Sunday at 3 and 7:30 p.m.

Calls out Billy Morgan. Another in the seemingly endless series of original bicentennial plays. At the Tufts Arena Theater, on Talbot Ave. in Medford. Performances July 13-17 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets $1-$4, with student discount.

Mayday. The saga of the 1971 anti-war demonstrations in Washington. Performed at the Boston Art Group Theater, 367 Boylston St. in Boston. Performances Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., beginning July 14.

Player Piano. Vonnegut presented at the New Boston Repertory Theatre, One Boylston Place in Boston, through July 18. Performances Wednesday through Sunday at 8:08 p.m. Tickets are $4-$4.50

The Drunkard. Musical melodrama at the Cabaret Down Under, Charles Playhouse, 74 Warrenton St. in Boston. Performances Tuesday through Thursday at 8:15 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and 10 p.m., Sunday at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $5-$7.

Winner Take All. New musical at the Colonial Theatre, 106 Boylston St. in Boston., through July 24. Performances Monday through Saturday at 8 p.m., with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5.50-$9.50.
