President Bok called for strong university leadership in support of research oriented institutions in a speech yesterday to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston.

Bok's address on "Universities and National Research Policy" was the first of ten public lectures the AAAS will offer during its 142nd annual convention, which opened yesterday at the Boston Sheraton.

Bok said "an unconfident nation will devote its energies to immediate needs" at the expense of vital basic research.

He added that a "balanced stable research policy is a must."
