Racket Women Are Shut Out, But They Remain Undismayed

By Brian L. Zimbler

The Radcliffe tennis team didn't win a single match this weekend against Port Washington, a Long Island racket club of nationally-ranked junior players, but coach Corey Wynn was not discouraged.

"They were just a little too sharp for us at this point," Wynn said last night. "We had some good games and good rallies, but they were a bit more consistent and more accurate."

Stayed Tight

There were some tight matches. Jinnie St. Goar, playing fifth singles, kept opponent Jina Carillo uneasy with strong attacking shots in the first set, but lost, 7-5. St. Goar then faded a bit in the second set, losing 6-2.

The doubles matches were even closer. St. Goar and Beth Craig held out for three sets in third doubles, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

"They managed to hang in there against strong opposition," Wynn said.

In second doubles, Katie Ditzler and Patty Wen lost their first set 7-1, but were barely edged out in a tie breaker in the second set, 7-6.

Coach Wynn is optimistic about the team's chances against Port Washington when they meet again in the spring. "We'll have had a chance to work on some things," he said.
