The Northeastern Huskies came within 151 seconds of upsetting Harvard's undefeated hockey team last night, an event slightly obscured by the final score of Harvard 4, Northeastern 2.
An incredible late rally, triggered by Crimson freshman Jon Garrity's breakaway goal at 17:29 of the final period, saved Harvard from apparent defeat and robbed the home team of an inspiring early-season ambush of the perennial Eastern power.
Garrity's goal, the end product of an excellent passing play keyed by Randy Millen and begun by defenseman Jack Hughes, pulled Harvard into a 2-2 tie with the Huskies. Two minutes later, the death blow was administered.
Thirty seconds away from the final buzzer and a mildly upsetting tie, the Huskies finally cracked when sophomore forward Doug Thompson deflected home a drive by wing Bobby Fowkes. The puck skittered under the left pad of Northeastern goaltender Jim Bowman (who had a spectacular night, late rally notwithstanding), and Harvard was assured of its 16th straight win over the cross-river rivals.
