Savoir-Faire

By Michael K. Savit

Dear Mom,

No, this is not a forgery. I know that two letters in two weeks is a bit too much to take, but I figure that it saves a lot of money, and I just got my Coop bill if you catch my drift.

Actually, though, I'm not writing to ask for money (you know that I'd never do that), but just to let you know that I made it back from Princeton safe, if not too sound.

I know that you were a bit worried when we last spoke and I told you that I was going to drive downt here, so I thought you'd like to be reassured that I'm still functioning.

To tell you the truth, I even had a pretty good time, although I couldn't help but get the feeling that I was spending the weekend at a country club. The dozen or so tennis courts right in the middle of the campus probably had a lot to do with it.

I don't know if you've seen the Globe today, but if you have, you're probably well aware that the football team won again. The score was--um--I think it was 20-14, but I'm not sure because I fell asleep in the second quarter and by the time I woke up I was back in Cambridge already.

Otherwise, though, the Harvard-Radcliffe teams didn't do so well. The soccer team lost, which was nothing new, but the really surprising thing was that the Radcliffe field hockey team fell for the first time this season.

Now I don't know if they played field hockey in your day (just kidding), but it's really a pretty exciting sport. Princeton won, 1-0, but as you know, it's not who wins or loses, but who has the best tailgating parties, and boy, did I go to a good one.

Granted, it was no match for Sol's Delicatessen, but how can you say no to fried chicken, roast beef sandwiches, apple pie and kosher dills. OK, I admit it, there was some hard stuff there too, but I hold my cider and vodka well, and besides, I didn't drive home for at least four hours.

And the food in the press box--the best I've had yet. They say that Princeton has class, but when they wheeled out those ham and cheese subs with just the right amount of mayo at halftime, I was all set to transfer.

The only real trouble came on the way back when I decided to play Tommy Tourist and see the sights in New Jersey. The next thing I knew, I was driving through downtown Newark at the happy hour, and if there's one experience in life which can be missed, it's driving through downtown Newark, at any hour.

Well, that's about all there is to say. Take care, and whatever you do, keep away from Newark.

P.S.--Please tell Jeffrey to please accept my collect calls.
