Wha' happened? On Saturday afternoon, the Radcliffe tennis team lost its first match since it was drubbed by Yale last April to a super-talented squad from Williams, 9-0.
The racquetwomen failed to capture a single set the entire afternoon, as "bagels" and "breadsticks" showered from the Ephwomen's racquets through the match, even though many games went to deuce.
Sally Roberts took her lumps at number one 6-1, 6-0 and Rita Funaro recipricated 6-0, 6-1 at the second slot. Number three Terry Clarke moved three slots up in the singles ladder for the match, only to get fireman's carried away 6-1, 6-0.
Number four Patty Wenn came the closest to a set victory, losing 7-6 in a tie-breaker first set and then getting whitewashed 6-0 in the final. Janet Clark and May Browne rounded out the nightmare results of the singles matches, Clark losing 6-2, 6-1 and Browne topped 6-1, 6-1.
The doubles matches resulted with more loves than Zsa Zsa Gabor and continued relentless play by Williams. The number one tandem of Liz Livingstone and Abbie Greenbaumme got Jim Ottoed 6-0, 6-0, as did the number three of Melissa Allen and Amy Kuhn. The number two duo of Kathy Coakley and Linda Marr were soundly waxed 6-3, 6-1 to roundout the goose egg parade.
In defense of the women in white, the absence of Denise Thal, Sukki McGraw, Beth Craig and Katy Ditzler was costly, and coach Corey Wynn pointed out that this was the first time all year that the squad had played a match indoors on a hard surface. The loss, though, the team's first of the fall season, was just as hard. Radcliffe should get back on track against the MIT Engineers today.
Wynn was impressed not only with the Williams team, who he continually termed "just too-tough for us," but with the poise and sportsmanship of his squad. "They handled themselves very well throughout the match," Wynn said.
