The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) gathered information about political dissidents at Brown University and Boston University in 1971 and 1972 according to recently released documents from the CIA's Operation Chaos.

The 141 pages of documents were released after Socialist Workers Party leader Peter Camejo filed suit under the Freedom of Information Act to take possession of any dossiers compiled on him.

Noel Rubenstein, editor of the Brown Daily Herald, said CIA agents had reportedly been present at various seminars and coffee hours sponsored by Brown's now-defunct Young Socialist Alliance.

"Most people at Brown are pretty amused about the whole thing," Rubenstein said. "One faculty member I talked to didn't even know we had a Young Socialist Alliance," he said.

Information was also compiled on dissidents at Utah State University.
