Yale University has instituted a number of new security measure in the wake of two violent crimes that have occurred in campus dormitories this fall.

One of the measures to be taken in the next few weeks in one that will put uniforms on a Yale police force which has traditionally consisted of plainclothesmen. Other changes include the installation of peepholes in dormitory doors and locks on dormitory bathrooms.

Harvard has adopted some of the Yale changes already. In 1973, peepholes were installed in all Houses and combination locks were placed in Weld Hall bathrooms when the Yard became coed in 1972.

The Harvard police force has worn uniforms for many years, although some officers still patrol in plainclothes, especially between midnight and 8 a.m.

Henry Chauncy Jr, Secretary of Yale, said yesterday that the steps are being taken in response to two separate incidents this fall in whiih students were raped in their dormitory rooms. He said one incident was the result of a student security guard letting an unauthorized person into a dormitory at 2 a.m.

Chauncy said one of the primary goals of the program is to increase the "security consciousness" of the Yale community.
