Hampton Hawes is a fine pianist alone and he is easily worth the inflated price of admission at the Jazz Workshop. However, when featured with Denny Dias, guitarist from Steely Dan, he may not be. This is not to take away from Dias, but he certainly takes away from Hawes (Thursday through Sunday nights at 9, 11, and 1, with a 4:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday.)

Sabby Lewis and a fifteen-piece orchestra are at Sandy's Jazz Revival at 54 Cabot Street in Beverly this weekend. The orchestra has among its many talents, Phil Wilson, local trombonist extraordinaire, and vocalist Mae Arnette.

Remember, there is still time to get to New York for the much bally-hooed Newport Jazz Festival. Recommended fare: McCoy Tyner with Rahsaahn Rollin Kirk tomorrow night at 7:30 in Avery Fisher Hall.
