Arthurs May Become Dean in U Hall; Jewett to Be Dean of II-R Admissions

Alberta Arthurs. Radcliffe dean of admissions, financial aid and women's education, will probably assume a new deanship in University Hall when the Harvard and Radcliffe admissions offices merge next month, sources said yesterday.

Although no official announcement has been made, L. Fred Jewett '57, Harvard dean of admissions and financial aid, has already been selected to become the first dean of the unified Harvard-Radcliffe admissions office.

Sources said this week that the announcements of Jewett's appointment and the other new positions within that single admissions office have been delayed until Arthur's position for next year is determined.

The merger of the two admissions others was recommended as part of the move to equal access admissions, approved this spring by Harvard and Radcliffe the Strauch Committee, which made the recommendations, suggested that only one dean of admissions be named.

Arthurs was offered a position as dean of undergraduate affairs under Dean Whitlock almost two weeks ago, the sources said, and met with Francis M. Pipkin, associate dean of the Faculty for the Colleges, yesterday afternoon to discuss what the post might entail.

Pipkin and Arthurs declined to comment yesterday, but Pipkin said that he expects an announcement of the subject "in the very near future."

A draft proposal for the new deanship, circulated earlier this month in University Hall, described the position as mainly involved in assisting Dean Whitlock on undergraduate affairs involving counseling and advising resources and needs.

The duties included coordinating communication and publicity to ensure that undergraduates are made aware of the various counseling and advising services--including OCS-OCI. Bureau of Study Counsel. House tutorials and advisor programs--and assisting Dean Rosovsky's task force on counseling and advising in identifying needs for the future.

Arthurs originally indicated she would accept the position, but has since asked Rosovsky, Whitlock and Pipkin to define further what responsibilities she would have, the sources said.

No Epps Conflict

The position would be similar to that of Archie C. Epps III, dean of students, in that both report directly to Whitlock. However, the role of the post would parallel, rather than conflict, with Epps's role, the sources said, since Epps deals largely with administrative matters and coordinating student activities.

Last month, Arthurs was offered the post as associate dean of Harvard-Radcliffe admissions, directly under Jewett, but she apparently decided she would rather move to University Hall, the sources said.

Arthurs said last night that she had "the highest respect" for all of the people she has worked with in the Harvard and Radcliffe admissions offices and that she has no doubts that the merged admissions office will function smoothly.

John P.
