Princeton blitzed the Harvard lacrosse team Saturday, 18-10. in a game at the Tigers' home field. The loss dropped the Crimson's season record to 2-8 and 0-4 in the Ivy League.
Harvard stayed close to Princeton for the first quarter and even led at one point in the period 2-1.
But in the second quarter the Tigers blew the Crimson off the field. The key moments of the game came from the 1-25 mark to the 4-23 point of the second stanza Princeton scored five unanswered goals in those three minutes to take an insurmountable 7.2 lead, and school was out for Harvard.
From that point on the Tigers continued to add to their advantage, taking a 10-5 lead into the second half. At the end of three periods it was 15-9, and the fourth quarter saw both coaches emptying their benches.
Bill MacKenzie was the individual star for Harvard, tallying five goals and two assists. Other scorers for the Crimson were Bill Tennis with two goals, and Mike Doherty, Kevin McCall and Sandy White with a goal apiece.
Tigers Move the Ball
Princeton outshot Harvard 40-25, but the big difference in the contest was the ability of the Tigers to move the ball out of their own zone. Princeton successfully completed 26 of 33 clears (moving the ball from your defensive zone in to the opposition's defensive zone). While the Crimson made just 17 of 32.
The only area where Harvard had the edge was in picking up ground balls. The Crimson laxmen got 40 versus 33 for the Tigers.
Harvard goalie Leroy Thompson was injured and removed from the game in the third period when a shot hit him on the face mask.
So fans can chalk up another disappointing game in what has turned out to be a season of disappointments for the young Harvard squad under first-year coach Bob Scalese.
