B. Brent Gordon '75, another member of the committee, said yesterday that some statements in Jackson's speech were "inappropriate" to the occassion of Class Day.

Jackson said that when she spoke to Carlagna prior to her audition he failed to tell her that the "appropriateness" of her theme to the occasion would be a criteria for selection.

Epps said yesterday that the committee placed "ton much emphasis" on whether the speech was "appropriate."

Jackson also complained member. Wells participated in the evaluation of her competitors.

Wells said yesterday that she had listened to the speeches of her competitors and participated in short discussions of them before she delivered her own oration.

Edwin M. Durso '75, a member of the committee, said that Wells offered to leave the room before her competitors delivered their speeches, but that the other members of the committee encouraged her to stay. The committee asked her to leave before the final voting, Durso said.

Epps and Wells both said yesterday that in the interest of fairness Wells should not have participated in the discussions.
