Divinity School Grant Endows $750,000 Fund

The Divinity School has established a $750,000 fund to help support faculty salaries as a result of a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Mellon Foundation is chaired by Former Harvard President Nathan M. Pusey '28. President Bok said yesterday that Pusey had spoken in favor of the grant to the Divinity School because he "recognizes from experience the particular difficulties in raising funds for the Divinity School."

Bok said these difficulties arise because divinity school alumni generally are not as affluent as alumni in other professional schools.

Preston Williams, acting dean of the Divinity School, said yesterday that the grant money will be used to hire additional faculty and staff, but not to raise salaries of present faculty.

Yale's Divinity School received a grant identical to Harvard's.
