Hilles and Lamont May Share One Administrator Next Year

The librarian of the College said yesterday that he will submit a proposal to Dean Rosovsky this week to combine the administrations of Hilles and Lamont libraries effective July 1 in an attempt to make both libraries more efficient.

Louis E. Martin, the College librarian, said the plan is experimental and, if approved, he believes it would not change the role Hilles plays in "serving the special needs of the students at the Quad" except to make the library more efficient.

Lucy M. Manzi, librarian of Hilles, said last night Martin appointed her yesterday as acting librarian of both Hilles and Lamont effective July 1, if the plan is approved.

Martin said that though no official action has been taken yet, before he decided to recommend the proposal to Rosovsky, "I checked with several people, and I think it will be approved."

"Manzi will be the acting librarian, because this is an experimental project, and we want to leave some room for flexibility," Martin said. He said the appointment, if approved by the dean, will be for two years.

He said that by unifying the administrations and viewing the two libraries as one, the libraries will better serve undergraduates and simultaneously improve their collections.

Ruth K. Perritt, former librarian of Hilles and a member of the committee to study the future of Hilles library, said yesterday that both the card catalogues and the process of ordering books will be more efficiently handled.

"In this time of budgetary concerns, it seems to be a very sensible thing to do," she said.

Martin said Manzi "has a through understanding of Radcliffe and Harvard and what the history of merger non-merger means" to the colleges.

Dean Rosovsky was in New York last night and could not be reached for comment on the proposal
