The Harvard sailing team captured the Ivy crown and the Radcliffe squad qualified for the national championships in separate meets this weekend.
Sparked by a strong skippering performance by Tim Black in the A division event, Harvard sailed to victory over its seven Ivy opponents, in the championship meet, which at times was marred by threatening weather.
Skippers Jim Hammett and Steve Sandeck copped victories in the B division events, and Harold Clark did a competent job as their crewman. Ogden Ross rode shotgun in the victorious A division boat.
Braving temperatures that hovered below 25 degrees all weekend, the Radcliffe sailing team qualified for the national championships for the eight straight year, finishing third in a strong sea of competitors.
The 'Cliffe was bettered by both Jackson, which finished first and captured the Jerry Reed trophy, and Yale, the host team in the Long Island Sound meet.
In the A division competition, Marie Roehm skippered her boat to consistent first-, second-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishes. On Saturday, Cassie Leavit crewed for Roehm; on Sunday, Sarah Heirich took over.
Pam Mack skippered Ruth Bandler to finishes of second and third throughout the weekend in the B division competition.
The wind in this weekend's meet was more than adequate, as many boats reportedly either capsized or came "awfully close to doing so," according to one slightly wet, anonymous skipper.
All three of the top teams in this weekend's New England Intercollegiate Women's Sailing Association meet will travel to Chicago, the windy city, for the national championships.
