Volleyball Team Faces Eastern Meet

Hopes High for Success

By Kathleen T. Riley

What Harvard team posted a 10-1 record last year, won the New England Championships against teams from Yale and MIT, and enters the season with nearly the same lineup? The Harvard volleyball team, which despite impressive credentials remains a forlorn entry among a score of major intercollegiate sports.

Invisibility

The team's invisibility on the sports scene, partly attributable to its midway position between being a full-fledged winter and spring sport, has gradually improved under the coaching of Mike Palm, New England coach of the year for the '74 season.

Palm, a graduate student in English and a former volleyball star at Yale, changed a limping offense to a successful Olympic-style 6-0 game-controlling strategy where three front court men set to the three front court men for the spike and the point.

The team lineup boasts returning Steve Kay as captain, who was named to last year's all-star first team supported by Peter Graham, Joe Antuncci, and Peter Haviland.

The next meet of the season will be March 16 against New Pattz followed by a return match against Springfield, the only loss registered last year, on Wednesday.

Members of the 16-team East Coast Volleyball League include Wentworth Institute, the University of Rhode Island. Penn State and other Ivy teams.
