Skaters Overwhelm Yale, 7-2, To Finish Perfect Ivy Season

By Elizabeth P. Eggert, Special to The Crimson

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--The Crimson varsity skaters, beset over the past week by fears of a lapse, proved their own anxiousness unwarranted last Saturday as they closed out their regular season schedule with a 7-2 victory over Yale at Ingalis Rink to coment Harvard's first perfect Ivy League record since 1957.

The win brought Harvard's overall mark to 21-3, 19-1 in ECAC Division I competition and 12-0 in the Ivies. This year marks the first time since 1963 that a Crimson squad has posted 21 victories in a season.

Harvard, ranked first by the ECAC selection committee, now begins its quest, for the NCAA Championship when it faces eighth-seeded Clarkson Tuesday night at Watson Rink in the ECAC quarterfinals.

The Crimson will attempt to avoid a repetition of its 1973 performance, when the Golden Kaights scored a 7-4 upset win at Watson to eliminate Harvard in the opening round of the ECAC playoffs.

Kevin Carr and Steve Dagdigian each tallied twice while Jim McMabon earned one goal and three assists to lead the Crimson against Yale. Saturday's contest signified a welcome and to a demoralizing season for the Elis, who finished the year, without a single ECAC Division I victory.

Yale's skaters were never in contention, unlike the previous week when they commanded a 2-0 lead until the game's closing minutes before going down, 3-2. Harvard jumped ahead, 3-0, in the opening period on goals by Carr. Dagdigian and Steve Janicek.

Eli forward Brian Kinsman, after missing two opportunities, finally tallied on his third breakaway at 1:33 of the middle stanza, but McMahon and Carr answered back with two power play goals before the period's close, extending the margin to 5-1.

Carr's score came during a five-minute man-up situation, when the Harvard power play unit combined particularly effectively.

Dagdigian, Yale's Randy Ludwar and the Crimson's Dave Bell collected goals in the final period.
