Hockey Squad Selects Carr To Be Next Season's Captain

Thomas Is Named MVP

By A.p. Quigley

The Harvard hockey team elected Junior Kevin Carr its captain for the 1975-76 season last night, as it put the finishing touches to one of the most successful reasons in its history at its annual breakup banquet.

The dinner, which is sponsored by the Friends of Harvard Hockey, was held in the Kirkland House dining hall, the first time the banquet has been held on campus since the 1940s.

It was "the first time I've been elected captain of anything," Carr said, thanking his teammates.

Wing Jimmy Thomas received the John Tudor Memorial Hockey Cup for the most valuable player. The award goes annually to that player who, beyond ability, displays qualities of sportsmanship, leadership and team cooperation, and has that quality called "the old come-through-in-the-pinch."

The Ralph Cooney Weiland Award, given to the player who exhibits spirited and aggressive play, was presented by the ex-Harvard mentor himself to center Leigh Hogan. Crimson goaltender Brian Petrol received the Canterbury Society Award for the Most Outstanding Ivy goalie, and defenseman Steve Janicek won the Donald Angier Hockey Trophy for being the most improved player during the year.

One additional trophy, the Engelbert Award, was presented by Janicek's defensive mate, Eddie Rossi. Rossi said the Engelbert Award is given to the player "who is the town clown or whatever...to someone who's done something crazy." The trophy is mounted with a hockey player on roller skates. Recipient of the award was Carr, who quipped, "This is a heck of an award for a captain-elect." Rossi did not specify--perhaps in the interest of good taste--for what Carr got the award.

In addition to the four trophies, the Friends of Harvard Hockey presented outgoing captain Randy Roth and William Cleary Sr., father of the Crimson coach, with large sketches of themselves.

So a season that saw Harvard soar to the heights of a perfect Ivy League season, attain the most wins ever by a Harvard team (23), and have a perfect Watson Rink record, only to be rudely disappointed in St. Louis, has finally come to a close.
