Senior captain Randy Roth and sophomore goaltender Brian Petrovek earned spots on the University Division Eastern All-America squad announced yesterday. Roth was named in the team, which is voted in by the Division I coaches, last year as well.
Joining the two Harvard Skaters are Boston University's captain and out-standing defenseman Vic Stanfield and ECAC tournament MVP Rick Meagher. Providence College's high-scoring defenseman Ron Wilson and the University of Vermont's Tim O'Connell round out the six-man team.
There are four such regional All-American teams, with University and College division sextets selected from both the Eastern and Western leagues. Coaches vote only on players in their own division and league.
Harvard will have a look at into of the West All-Americans tonight when it faces Minnesota in the NCAA tournament. Gopher defenseman Les Auge and forward Mike Polich grabbed spots on the all-star squad.
The remaining four on the West's University division squad are goaltender Ed. Mio of Colorado College, defenseman Brian Engborn of Wisconsin, and forwards Bob D'Avise from Michigan Tech and Tom Ross of Michigan State.
Although none of the balloting is disclosed by the sports information office at the University of New Hampshire, which announced the squad, sources close to the vote counting indicate that Harvard's Jimmy Thomas was also in the running for the honor.
Petrovek and Roth lead the Crimson squad in offense and defense this season. Petro sports a 3:70 goals-against averages, the best in the ECAC, while Roth picked up to points on 21 goals and 28 points to top all Crimson scores.
