8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
The Richard G. Wake Memorial Trophy will remain at Columbia for the fourth straight year to commemorate Columbia's win over the Crimson wrestlers. 21-18, in New York City yesterday.
The trophy, which has been awarded yearly since 1964, and is named for a Columbia wrestling coach, seemed in little danger of making the trip to Cambridge this year.
Columbia took the first five bouts and lead by a commanding 18 points going into the heavier weights.
Columbia defaulted at heavyweight giving Kip Smith an easy six-pointer for the Crimson which ended the scoring.
The first of Harvard's scoring came at 158 as freshman Jim Corcoran over powered Danny Yee, 4-2. The effort did not carry over, however, as first-team all-Ivy Jamie Fee of Columbia defeated Harvard's second-team all-Ivy Bruce Johnson, 9-0.
Jim Strathmeyer grabbed the next Crimson match as he picked off Ricky Ouellet of Columbia, 5-0. Ouellet narrowly avoided a pin in the final seconds of the match which would have given Harvard three more points and a shot at a tie.
Despite an already certain Columbia victory, tremendous effort was registered by Sal D'Agostino at 190 as he came around from a twenty point disadvantage to pin his opponent Columbia freshman Mat Peckman, formerly a high-school All-American.
The match started off with Mitch Silverman and Andy Sama grappling it out at 118. They wrestled scoreless until the final period when Sama managed to get some points adding three to the Columbia score.
The lone Columbia pin came in at 142 at Dave Vitriello downed Kelly Jensen in 1:54 in Vitriello's first bout in the class.
