Swimming Quakers Sink Under Harvard Barrage

By James W. Reinig

The Harvard squamen traveled to Philadelphia on Saturday to meet the swimming Quakers from Penn and came home with an easy 75-38 victory.

One of the high points of the meet was in the first event as the Harvard medley relay team, with Hess Yntema swimming with it for the first time this year, beat in good Penn relay team in the time of 3-34.

Robbie Craig from Penn looked impressive as he took both dives. He won the one-meter competition by 40 points and easily won the three-meter event despite fine performances by Harvard divers Davis English, Roger Johannigman and Mike Toal.

"Except for Billy Heinz of Princeton Craig is the best diver we have seen this year," Harvard swimming coach Ray Essick said yesterday. "He looked very, very good."

A national finalist while in high school, Penn's Gary Plantier grabbed a win in the 1000 freestyle. Harvard finished 1.2 in the 200 free, behind the performances of Brent Haywood and Paco Canales.

Harvard's George Keim and Steve Baint swam to the top two spots in the 50 free. Baird's time qualified for the Eastern Championships, as did the time of Kevin O'Connell, who won the 200 yard individual medley.

Tom Wolfe won the 200 back in 1:59 and Fullerton and Gordon placed first and second to wrap up the Harvard scoring.

"When we found out [Penn star Brad] Gandee was hurt." Essick said, "It changed the whole complexion of the meet. Before they could have gone with their best men and had a chance, but after, that they didn't."
