Muhammad Ali said yesterday that he feels guilty and plans to cleanse himself by giving away his profits from future fights. Ali is scheduled to light Chuck Wepner March 24,
"I feel real guilty making so much money so easy," the heavyweight them plan said yesterday at a news conference in New York. "Fighting George Forman was an easy $5 million." Ali said, "Fighting Check Wepner will be an easy million and a half."
Needy to Benefit
"From here on out, in all my championship fights, I don't what nothing but what it costs to train, I want my share to go to needy groups," Ali said.
Two of the groups Ali said would receive money from his fights were the National Association for the Advancement of colored People (NAACP) and the Nation of Islam, which is a religious sect known as the Black Muslims. Ali is a Black Muslim.
Ali did not overlook a major benefactor of his purses--the Internal Revenue Service. He said his Charity would begin "after I paid my taxes and paid everybody."
