Harvard Swimmers Sink Tigers, 62-51

Amid the deafening roar of the overflow crowd at Princeton's Dillon Pool, Harvard senior Steve Baird edged the Tigers' champion sprinter Fred Test to win the 400 yard free relay and give the Crimson a 62-51 victory on Saturday.

Seven Points

Captain Dave Brumwell and Ted Fullerton had just placed first and second in the 200-yard breaststroke for a 55-51 Harvard lead, but the Crimson had to take the seven winner-take-all points in the final relay to win the meet and claim the top position in Eastern swimming.

The superb effort, especially from Harvard aquamen Baird, Brumwell and Hess Yntema, was probably the key to the meet. Baird swam, the final leg of the victorious medley relay team, the free relay team, and placed a close second to Test in the 100 free.

If there is anything to senior year pride." Harvard coach Ray Essick said yesterday. "Dave Brumwell is an example of it."

The Harvard captain swam one of his best meets in years as he won the 200-yard individual medley and the 200-yard breaststroke. He swam the 200-IM in the excellent time of 1:59.1.

Yntema, swimming competitively for the first time this season, won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.6, raced on the winning 400-yard free relay team, but lost to Princeton's superstar Joe Loughran by a second in the 200 free.

Loughran Breezes

The incredible Loughran breezed to a victory in the 1000, jumped out of the pool, dried off with a towel and then climbed on to the starting block for the 200 free. The Princeton coaches did stall the meet for 12 minutes however to give Loughran a breather.

"I was a little irritated at the delay," Essick said. "(Princeton coach Bill) Farley must have been hiding in the showers when they were trying to start the 200 free."

Clean Sweep

Loughran completed his sweep with a win in the 500 feet with an outstanding 4:37 time. "We knew no one could beat Loughran so we just in for second and Paco Canales really did a job for us," Essick said Canales finished second in both the $50 and that 1000.

In the 500 he edged Princeton captain Curtis Hayden by just .7 seconds in what Essick termed "an incredible effort."

"Poor Canales, just a freshman, was up against the Princeton captain in the biggest meet of the year in front of the noisy Princeton crowd," Essick said, "He just turned it on in the final 25 yards in a very, very exciting race."

Princeton's Bill Heinz took first in the one and three meter diving, but Harvard finished second and third in both events. Roger Johannigman nabbed two second places, while Mike Toal placed third in the one-meter and Dave English was third in three-meter.

Defending Easters champion Tom Wolfe, placed first in the 200 backstroke (2:00) and teammate Duncan Pyle took second (2:01).

Essick's comments on Yntema amazing, simply amazing"), Loughran ("incredible"), Baird ("just ran emdown"), and the whole team ("showed real class") begin to run up the meet. But that hardly describes what was a close and exciting meeting of the two best teams to swim in the Ivy League in the last 15 years.
