Harvard's indoor track team began its season on the right foot last night by demolishing an undermanned and out-classed Boston University squad 94-18 at Briggs Cage.
The Crimson swept all three places in half of the meet's 14 events and took first in all but the triple jump and 40-yard hurdles.
Although the victory was an all-round romp, Dan Jiggetts (two firsts in the weight events), Stein Rafto (a first and a close second in distance runs) and Huntington Block (a first and a second in jumping events) stood out.
Coach Bill McCurdy last night called the victory "great in terms of enthusiasm and people doing things." But, McCurdy qualified, "this really only amounts to our first full workout because of the inavailability of the cage."
Just Workout
Although the meet may have been only a workout for Harvard, it must have seemed like a workover to the BU Terriers.
Jiggetts started the workover with his pair of decisive wins in the weight events. The 260-pound senior heaved the 35-pound weight 57 ft. 10 1/2 in. for the first victory, then tossed the shotput 51 ft.--even for the second.
The Crimson solidified its early lead as Kevin McCafferty and Mitch Witten grabbed second and third places in the shotput sweep and Ed Ajootian placed second in the weight throw.
The lead, which reached 18-1 at one point in the early going, kept growing in the jumping and running events.
Freshman Geoff Stiles hurdled to victory in the pole vault with a 13 ft. 6 in. effort. Block took the long jump with a 21 ft. 4 1/4 in. leap and Mel Embree skied to an easy win in the high jump at 6 ft. 8 in.
Block finished second in the pole vault, Bill Wendell and Hasan Kayali completed a sweep in the long jump and Dan Sullivan placed second in the high jump.
Dominating runners
Rakto opened Harvard's domination of the running events by striding to victory in the mile run in 4:18.9. Freshman Scott Dolson and John Chafee completed a Crimson sweep in the mile.
Rafto missed his chance for a second win by only a few seconds in the two-mile run when freshman Pete Fitzsimmons set a winning 9:22.0 pace. Will Brownsberger took third in the event.
Harvard also swept the 600 and 1000-yard runs behind Joel Peter's 1:16.0 time in the first and Bill Okerman's 2:18.9 clocking in the second.
