Women's House Hoop Set Up

A women's intramural basketball program will begin December 14 and become part of the Straus Cup competition for intramural supremacy, Floyd Wilson, director of Intramural Athletics, said yesterday.

'Overwhelming' Turnout

Wilson decided to institute the program after an "overwhelming" turnout for a women's basketball tournament held last Sunday. He said his original intention was merely to have a tournament but he was "surprised and very pleased" when seven teams comprised of over 50 participants showed up.

The program will tap off December 14 with Adams playing Eliot, Winthrop meeting Lowell, and Dudley taking on Mather. The final contest will pair Dunster versus a combined Kirkland-Quincy team.

The enthusiastic support for women's basketball is not just an isolated response, Wilson said, but rather is an indicator that Women's intramural athletics are "starting to pick up."

During the fall, women's intramurals suffered from disinterest, poor organization and subsequently many of the women's contests were decided by forfeit.

Jon Judge, coach of the Mather squad, feels Wilson's view that the trend has reversed is correct. Two people were on hand for the first meeting of women's athletics this year, Judge related. "Now," he said, "the women are asking for more practice time."
