"To call chapter 27 of my book racist is slander,"Edward O. Wilson '53, professor of Zoology, said last night defending his recent book "Sociobiology: The New Synthesis."
Wilson spoke before 250 members of the Harvard Medical Society at the medical school last night. His book has been attacked by the Committee Against Racism because it "attempts to establish a genetic basis for human behavior."
Irven DeVore '66, professor of anthropology, and Dr. John C. Nemiah, professor of Psychiatry spoke on related topics. Dr. Miles F. Shore '50, Bullard Professor of Psychiatry at Mass. Mental Health Center moderated the two hour program.
Wilson said that he was certain that patterns of altruism are inherited for each species. DeVore called the changes in biology in the last ten years "truly revolutionary."
