Cambridge City Manager James L. Sullivan yesterday declared a five day period of mourning following the death Monday of Police Chief Francis Pisani.
Sullivan also appointed Captain Nicholas Fratto as acting police chief, a department spokesman announced yesterday.
Pisani, an 18-year veteran of the police department, replaced James F. Reagan, who resigned earlier this year.
The spokesman said Pisani suffered an apparent heart attack as he left his Somerville home on Tuesday evening to inspect Cambridge polling places.
Pisani, who was 48, will be buried Friday, following a full police and military funeral in Somerville. Flags in Cambridge will fly at half staff and all city buildings will be draped in black bunting during the mourning period.
