Placement Priorities Shift

By Anne. E. Bartlett

The Office of Placement Services of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences has expanded its program this fall to include counseling on non-academic jobs, the director of the office said yesterday.

Donna G. Martyn, director of the Office of Placement Services, said that the emphasis of the office had to shift because of the "increasing awareness of the diminishing number of teaching jobs available."

The expanded program includes a career exploration program, an alumni advisory service, and a placement office a newsletter, all dealing with jobs other than academic positions. Martyn said.

The informal career exploration talks thus far have dealt with such topics as journalism and the Foreign Service, and will be concerned with health services and consulting careers in the future.

Martyn said the new goal of the office was to give students an "expanded notion" of the kinds of jobs available, as well as to continue its original purpose of helping graduates find academic positions.
