ECAC Cites Jim Kubacki As Top Player of Week

The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) named Harvard quarterback Jim Kubacki player of the week Monday, for his performance in Harvard's upset victory over Brown.

Kubacki, who missed the Princeton game the week before because of a bruised shoulder, bounced back against Brown, completing 15 out of 18 passes for a total of 289 yards, just two short of the Harvard record.

Not Alone

"I didn't think it was such a great individual effort," Kubacki said last night. "It was a good team effort. There wasn't a heckuva lot for me to do. I had protection, and wide open receivers. All I had to do was execute," Kubacki added.

"I think it's an outstanding thing. Jimmie has really accomplished a lot this season," Harvard coach Joe Restic said last night. Kubacki also won the Golden Helmet award, given by the Boston sportswriters, Restic said. "These are really two outstanding awards," he added. added.

Third in Nation

Among Kubacki's 289 yards in aerial maneuvers were three touchdown passes. The junior signal-caller also ran for a touchdown. This week, Kubacki is third in the nation in total offense, averaging 222.6 yards per game, trailing Gene Swick of Toledo, the leader, and Craig Penrose of San Diego State, who is second.

Kubacki was also named the offensive player of the game by ABC, which televised the game throughout the East.

The Game

Neither Kubacki nor Restic would comment on the team's attitude to this week's game against Yale. "We're a slow building team. I'm sure we'll be ready for the game," Kubacki said. "It's easily the biggest game we'll play. It makes or breaks the season," he added.

Restic said it was too early to tell how ready the team is for the Yale game. "We're still getting over the bumps and bruises we got from Brown," Restic said.
