As was the case in football, the Ivy League soccer season opened with two games last weekend, but unlike the former, there was a shocking development in one of the games.

Shocking, because the Columbia booters emerged from the weekend action triumphant. The Lion's victory, 2-1 over Princeton, snapped a string of 23 consecutive games in which they hadn't won. The last Columbia victory in the Ivies was way back on November 6, 1971

Goals by Osvaldo Maher and Larry Moss produced the triumph, as Columbia reversed one streak and perhaps, began another.

More in keeping with tradition, the Brown booters bested Penn, 4-0, under the lights in Philadelphia. Marc Griffin scored two of the goals for the powerful Bruins, while Fred Pereira and Adrian Van Beek accounted for the others.

Crimson Sixth

Brown's victory enabled it to remain atop the New England soccer poll. Conneticut and Springfield placed second and third, respectively, while the Crimson booters stood sixth.
