Jazz

By Jim Cramer

The legacy of John Coltrane returns to the Jazz Workshop this week in the form of jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. The romantic Tyner is capable of tremendous staccato outbursts, especially after he is warmed up (probably around the third of three shows each night). He'll be in town until Sunday at the Jazz Workshop on 733 Boylston St.

Last spring Tyner spent part of his five-day Boston tenure giving the audience a preview of his blistering Atlantis album. This time the playing will be more varied. Tyner's supporting staff, traditionally composed of the best music men around, like tenor saxman Azar Lawrence, complement the man who learned the true value of interaction with the master himself, Coltrane. Three shows nightly; 9, 11, 1.

Meanwhile over at Sandy's jazz revival in Beverly, will be Buddy De Franco and his quintet. De Franco is an inventive clarinetist.

Coming into town for a five-day stay at Paul's Mall with his jazz/rock legions next week will be Gato Barbieri with AI Jarreau. More on that later.
