Brown, Princeton Top Ivy League Standings; Darmouth Wins Close Contest Against Penn

Brown and Princeton (both 2-0) retained their positions atop the Ivy League football standings Saturday by defeating Yale and Cornell, respectively. In the other league games Dartmouth (1-0) registered a 19-14 win over Penn.

The Bruins' 27-12 showdown win over the defending co-champion Elis (0-1) at Providence, R.I., may eventually determine the league champion.

Bob Bateman, Brown's 6-ft.-5-in. transfer quarterback from the University of Vermont, ran the Bruin offense in the first half, clicking on nine passes with receiver Bob Farnham for 98 yards.

Brown's offense continued to move after Bateman had to leave the game in the third quarter with an injury. Running backs Kevin Slattery and Bob McNamara churned out yardage up the middle against Yale's defense line, and placekicker Jose Violante booted two field goals.

Brown has now won seven straight games over the last two seasons.

Cornell's offensive unit lost four fumbles to the Tiger defense at Ithaca, N.Y., and Princeton quarterback Ron Beible led his team to a 16-8 win over the Big Red.

Beible connected on 12 of 20 passes for 150 yards, hitting nationally ranked receiver Neil Chamberlain six times for 93 yards.

Tiger placekicker Scott Morrison provided the margin of victory with field goals of 33, 28, and 42 yards, each following fumble recoveries.

Princeton's defense held Cornell (0-1) to less than 200 yards for the game. The Big Red failed to put any points on the scoreboard until the third quarter, when Bob Hall blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety.

Cornell's offense did not put together a solid touchdown drive until the fourth period, when it was too late to make a difference.

Injured quarterback Mike Brait went to the air only 11 times in leading Dartmouth to a ground victory over Penn 19-14 in a downpour at Hanover, N.H. Roland Griggs ran for one Big Green touchdown and Tom Fleming caught the other following his 46 yard punt return to the Penn four-yard line.

Quarter quarterback Bob Graustein connected on 20 of 29 passes for 230 yards in a losing effort. Although Penn (0-2) outgained Dartmouth in total yardage 337-191, three turnovers cost them the game.
