Injury-Hampered Crimson Raquetmen Trounce Hapless Williams Squad, 8-1

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Harvard squash team gave a quick, concise lesson in the art of the game to a rather young Williams squad yesterday at Hemenway Gym, as the Crimson stroked to an 8-1 victory.

The powerful Harvard squad now stands 3-0 on the season.

Despite an elbow injury which sidelined Captain Peter Blasier and a long layoff from the holidays which hampered the team's performance, coach Jack Barnaby said he was very pleased with his men's showing.

Barnaby said, "I was especially impressed with Dick Cashin in the number one slot. He had been rowing in Egypt all vacation and got off to a slow start, but he came on strong and almost caught the Williams boy."

Cashin eventually lost, 18-16, 12-15, 15-10, 15-14.

Bill Kaplan, playing number two for Harvard, simply out-angled his opponent, winning 15-9, 15-13, 15-12. Steve Mead, Tim Morgan and Cass Sunstein, playing in the sixth, seventh, and eighth spots, each shut out his opponent 3-0.

Barnaby said Morgan "played the best I have ever seen him."

Peter Havens at four handled Williams' Mile Werner easily, 15-11, 15-16, 15-8, 15-8. Fred Fisher at three bested his rival, 15-12, 15-9, 17-18, 15-11. Jeff Wiegand also had little problem with Bob Beck, winning 15-9, 15-11, 11-15, 15-8.

Final Match Tightest

The tightest match of the day was in final slot, where Harvard's Howland Murphy edged out Lindsay Fowler, 15-11, 17-18, 18-17, 15-9.

Ephman coach Sean Sloane said, "The boys always enjoy playing Harvard. We know we are going to lose, but we wind up learning a lot. Harvard has a very classy team and they should handle Dartmouth easily."

Williams defeated the Big Green by an impressive 8-1 score earlier in the season, and Coach Barnaby agrees with Sloane's assessment.

"We'll win Saaturday. I feel the team is starting to come on now and things are beginning to click."

The freshman squash team fended off a strong Williams challenge, squeezing out a 5-4 win.
