Thinclads Outdistance Huskies; Relay Gives Crimson Victory

The Crimson thinclads opened a long lead on the second lap of the mile relay and held on to win and defeat Northeastern, 63-55, Saturday at Briggs Cage.

The relay, consisting of Gary Schmidt, John Maggio, Sam Butler and Joel Peters, took a slim lead over Northeastern in the first leg that widened considerably after Schmidt passed to Maggio. Coach Bill McCurdy said yesterday that Maggio "took off like he was running back to Texas. All they had to do for the rest of the race was hold on to the baton."

In addition to Maggio, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace turned in winning performances in both the long and triple jump. Both had been unable to compete in the Army meet because of conflicts with classes and interviews.

Individual standouts were Chris Queen, second in the shot put, and Dan Sullivan, second in the high jump--both of whom produced their best performance of the year; Dan Jiggetts, who placed second in the throw and third in the shot put, and Bill Ockermann, who nabbed second in the mile run and third in the 1000 yd. run.

Irwin Cohen, coach of the Northeastern team, called the meet "magnificent."

"It is fortunate to have two teams of this caliber just get together and have a great meet," he said.

Winners in the field events are: Dov Dherassi of Northeastern in the 35 lb. weight; Len Rao of Northeastern in the shop put; co-captain Blayne Heckel, first in the pole vault, 15 ft. 6 in., Don Berg second, Steve Haines third, all of Harvard; Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace in the long jump and triple jump; Ahmed Kayali second in the triple-jump, Mel Embree third, all for Harvard; Mel Embree first in the high jump, clearing 6 ft. 10 in.

Winners in the running events are: Mike Buckley of Northeastern in the mile; Mark Lech of Northeastern in the 600 yd. run; Ben Butler in the 40 yd. high hurdles; Mike Hickey of Northeastern in the 1000 yd. run; Jim Flore of Northeastern in the two mile run; Harvard in the mile relay with a time of 3:28.6; and Northeastern in the two mile relay with a time of 8:19.2.
