Stickmen Top MIT, 16-2, To Record First Triumph

The varsity stickmen ended a lacrosse win drought yesterday on home turf with a deluge of points rained on hapless crosstown rival MIT, while the freshman edition also put in its oar, with a come-from-behind triumph over visiting Andover.

Star attackman Kevin McCall sparked the 16-2 varsity victory with a four goal, one assist performance, while crease-mate Jim Quinn made key feeds to garner one goal and five assists.

The Crimson jumped to a 9-0 first quarter edge, but added no points in the second quarter. In the second half it stretched the bulge to 15-0 before the Techmen dented the nets. Both MIT tallies came late in the fourth quarter.

Other individual standouts for Harvard were Andy Gellis, with two goals and an assist; Bruce Bruckman who added two scores; A1 Costello, again with two; and defenseman Mike Belmont, who crossed the midfield stripe to claim an assist.

In the nets, Bruce Poliquin and Leroy Thompson defused the few salvos from the feckless Tech offense. Poliquin earned three, and Thompson two saves.

The win was the varsity's first. It now sports an overall record of one win and four losses, and an 0-3 Ivy slate.

Meanwhile, the Yardling ten stretched their own battle record to 4-0 with exciting win over the upstart preppies from Phillips Andover Academy, 8-5.

The freshmen took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Academy boys staged a precocious, rash crush of goals, scoring five times in seven and one-half minutes. The Andies held that 5-1 lead at the half.

But the Crimson freshmen, paced by Bill MacKenzie's two goals and one assist and Mike Doherty's two goals, took the game back from the Blue, with seven second-half goals.

MacKenzie is the leading scorer for the freshmen with 15 tallies.

This Saturday the lacrossemen entertain Princeton. Last year, the away tilt with the Bengals proved the turning point of the season for the then 0-8 Crimson. After a 10-9 victory, the team played perfect ball until an anticlimactic loss to Yale.
