Into a Quiet Hibernation For the Summer

The Committee on Houses and Undergraduate Life passed into summer hibernation quietly this week after a low-key discussion of affirmative action, prize money disparities and the freshman mailing list.

In its second meeting of this month, CHUL asked the Strauch Committee-which is reviewing the relationship between Radcliffe and Harvard-to investigate the apparent discrepancy between the amount of prize money received by female and male undergraduates.

The results of a recent study indicate that Radcliffe students have received less than 6 per cent of the prize funds opened to them by a 1971 legal action.

CHUL also approved a resolution supporting the University's affirmative action plan, and asked Harvard to maintain a commitment to fully non-discriminatory hiring, recruitment and promotion procedures.

CHUL also decided after some discussion to make available to nine undergraduate organizations the addresses of incoming freshmen this summer. The nine groups use the mailing list to send materials, such as The Crimson's preregistration issue, to the new students before they arrive at Harvard.
