President Bok said this week that his Special Assistant Walter J. Leonard "would be willing to meet with the authors" of the 12-point proposal by Harvard Afro for the W.E.B. DuBois Institute to discuss their disagreements with the report on the institute prepared by a committee Leonard chaired.
Bok said that "a number of [Afro's] points are subsumed within the Leonard Committee report" and that it is "plausible that at any given time the director of the institute might be a tenured member of the Afro-American Studies Department.
Afro favors requiring that the director be an Afro professor but, says Bok, "The problem is in making a restriction."
