Connecticut Cagers Accept Invitation To NIT Tourney

The University of Connecticut basketball team has accepted a bid to the National Invitation Tournament in New York City, UConn sports information director Joe Soltys said yesterday.

The Huskies received the bid yesterday morning and accepted immediately, Soltys said.

He said coach Dee Rowe looked at the invitation as the beginning of the culmination of a dream that began 33 years ago--to get into a national basketball tournament either as a player or coach.

UConn finished its regular season Saturday, defeating Boston University and wound up with an 18-7 record.

The Huskies finished second in the Yankee Conference with a 9-3 mark behind the University of Massachusetts which also has accepted an NIT bid.

UConn's only previous appearance in the NIT was in 1955 when the Huskies finished the season 20-5.
