ECAC Finally Decides Seeds; Harvard Gets Number 2 Spot

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

It's official. The ECAC Division One hockey tournament seedings were finally decided yesterday after a wild and unpredictable season came to an end.

New Hampshire (15-5 in the division) had already wrapped up the top spot earlier in the week, but the five-man selection committee felt it should wait to the last moment before announcing the rest of the seeds. Harvard (15-6) was awarded the second seed, with Boston University third and Cornell fourth.

The top four teams will enjoy home ice advantage in the opening round Tuesday night. Cornell will host the number five seed, St. Lawrence; B.U. will entertain sixth seeded Dartmouth; Harvard invites number seven seed Providence to Watson Rink and UNH plays host to RPI, the final seed.

Shot at Seed

The committee, which includes Warren Schmakel of B.U., Andy Geiger of Brown, Gib Holgate of Yale and Bob Deming of Colgate, had to wait for the results of last night's Cornell-Penn game before deciding on the eighth seed in the tourney. Penn's 6-7 overtime loss to the Big Red cost it a shot at the number eight seed and dropped the Quakers out of the picture altogether.

If all of the top teams win, New Hampshire and Cornell face each other while Boston University gets a shot at revenging its February Beanpot loss to Harvard.
